Optical Coherence Tomography
At SPEX we are excited to offer you a state of the art glaucoma and retinal health assessment. The Cirrus HD-OCT performs a powerful test to help your Dr. Campbell identify early signs of eye disease that can lead to irreversible blindness. Diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy tend to progress without any pain in the early stages. While age is a major risk factor for development of many eye conditions, there are always exceptions.
The resolution of both SPEX eyecare’s scanning lasers is 11 times better than a typical MRI, with resolution being 4 microns (a typical blood cell is about twice as big at 7.5 microns).
Canon Retinal Imaging
In a flash using our Canon CR6-45NM digital retinal imager we can take an image of the inside of your eye so the doctor can assess the overall health of the inside of your eye as well as diagnose conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer. We will look for signs of cancerous lesions, hemorrhages, glaucoma and macular degeneration to name a few. The doctor will review your images with you in the room and explain any of the findings, treatments or recommendations.
Digital Retinal Imaging
Digital Retinal Imaging allows your eye doctor to evaluate the health of the back of your eye, the retina. It is critical to confirm the health of the retina, optic nerve and other retinal structures. The digital camera snaps a high-resolution digital picture of your retina. This picture clearly shows the health of your eyes and is used as a baseline to track any changes in your eyes in future eye examinations. We use cutting-edge digital imaging technology to assess your eyes. Many eye diseases, if detected at an early stage, can be treated successfully without total loss of vision. The retinal evaluation Synemed software provides our eye doctor is invaluable in the early detection of eye disease.
Other software advances such as guided progression analysis (GPA), provide paradigm shifts by evaluating your individual state of eye health over time as compared to your first visit, as well as established normative data.
This is very important in assisting our optometrist in Seattle to detect and measure any changes to your retina each time you get your eyes examined, as many eye conditions, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration are diagnosed by detecting changes over time.

CIRRUS HD-OCT RETINAL SCAN
You may be worry about sight threatening diseases like macular degeneration or glaucoma. This amazing instrument takes 3 dimensional images of the eye, allowing us to see what’s happening within the layers of tissue. Using a specific wavelength of laser, we can cut slices in through retinal, corneal or lens tissue. This technology helps us diagnose many retinal and corneal diseases. But more importantly, it allows us to monitor changes in these diseases to the micron. (There are 25,000 microns to an inch.) We’re able to track changes like never before, giving us better information to guide your treatment.

The second 2 images show an increase in retinal thickness. Notice the valley is now evaluated. We are also able to tell the thickness of any given point within a scan for more detail.
This instrument also can be used for specialty contact lens fitting, ensuring a better fit and less time spent in office. It also can give us corneal thickness, which is a test we use for our pre-Lasik patients.
